CBI probes source of Bora's bribe money
The CBI is investigating the source of Rs 17 lakh that former Assam education minister Ripun Bora had offered as a bribe to a CBI official to keep his name out of a murder case.
This is just one of the questions that the investigating agency will put to the senior Assamese Congress politician and his associate RK Maheshwari who were both remanded to three days of CBI custody by a city court.
The sacked minister was caught by CBI sleuths while he was trying to escape after he allegedly threw the bag containing Rs 10 lakh, the first installment, in a guesthouse in Sunder Nagar. According to the CBI, the minister attempted to bribe DSP A B Gupta, who is investigating the Daniel Toppo murder case in which the minister is one of the suspects.
Mr Bora, who arrived in Delhi on June 2, allegedly asked Mr Gupta to come to room 213 at a guesthouse in Sunder Nagar. On the appointed day the minister and his associate arrived at the guesthouse and walked into a trap set by the CBI. The CBI has also secretly videotaped the entire transaction. A third associate Mukul Pathak, who was acting as a middleman in the transaction, was arrested in Guwahati.
The Delhi court after hearing arguments remanded the accused to CBI custody till June 7.
