NEW DELHI: A portion of the garbage dump at the Ghazipur landfill site, in East Delhi, caved in today, killing two persons. Officials said that both the bodies had been recovered.

According to officials, four vehicles, which were moving on a nearby road, fell into a drain after the garbage dump collapsed on them this afternoon.

A fire department official said that a rescue operation was underway and four fire tenders had been rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, Ranbir Singh, EDMC Commissioner, said that the reason behind the tragedy could be ascertained only after investigation.

In another development, an NDRF team comprising 45 personnel has been rushed to cave-in site.

According to reports, some 2,800 tons of garbage are dumped at the Ghazipur landfill every day. The garbage mainly comes from east Delhi, which is home to more than 4 million pople.
