Castro sets long-delayed Communist Party Congress for 2009

President Raul Castro has announced that the long-delayed sixth Communist Party Congress that will map out Cuba's future political and economic agenda will be held in the second half of 2009.

HAVANA: President Raul Castro on Monday announced that the long-delayed sixth Communist Party Congress that will map out Cuba's future political and economic agenda will be held in the second half of 2009.

"The Political Office deems it necessary to carry out the VI Party Congress" and "we call on this meeting to set its day for the end of next year," Castro told a meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

Cuba's Communist Party congresses are held every five years. The last one was held in 1997 and the following one in 2002 has been delayed.

Raul Castro has been implementing modest economic reforms since taking over as president from his ailing 81-year-old brother Fidel in February.
