Cash distribution; Azmi's brother summoned by police

Shahid Azmi allegedly distributed cash to party supporters, police said.

MUMBAI: Abu Shahid Azmi, brother of Samajwadi Party candidate from Mumbai, Abu Asim Azmi, has been summoned by police following an official complaint that he allegedly distributed cash to party supporters, police said here today.

"Abu Azmi's brother has been asked to appear at the police station to investigate into the alleged cash distribution matter," a police official told PTI here today.

"Following the reports that model code of conduct was violated by distribution of money, Returning Officer Ashwini Joshi complained to the police," he said adding that, "We will question Shahid and others."

The SP candidates' brother allegedly distributed wads of currency notes among some participants of Azmi's procession before he went to file his nomination papers last week to contest from Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency.

Election officials recently gave a notice to sitting Congress MP from Mumbai North, Govinda for giving money to people outside his Juhu residence on the festival of Holi. Govinda was later given a clean chit.
