NEW DELHI : Acknowledging arguments of security risks from states over the number of cars present in the carcade of President Pratibah Patil during her visits, the Presidential Secretariat has decided to cut the number of vehicles to more than 50 per cent in such trips.

Home departments of some states, including Maharashtra, where the President visits frequently, approached the Union Home Ministry, saying that the number of cars in the carcade pushed cars of state's police chief and chief secretary way behind, official sources said.

The reasoning given by them was that in case of any emergency situations, these two officials were there to take command of the situation and pass necessary orders on the spot, they said.

One of the police chief had commented that it would take him a walk of nearly half-a-kilometre before he reaches the spot in case of exigencies, the sources added.

The carcade number has now been reduced from 40 to less than 20 with maximum staff of the Presidential entourage asked to travel inside a bus in the cavalcade.
