Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh today condemned AAP state chief Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for lending support to the 'Sikh Referendum 2020'.

Singh took to Twitter to voice his discontent. He said, “I strongly condemn the statement of your LOP Sukhpal Khaira supporting referendum 2020 that aims for Punjab to secede from the Indian Union."

The Senior leader of Congress party asked Arvind Kejriwal to clarify his stand on the comments made by his party men. In a statement he termed Khaira's statement favouring the referendum as unfortunate, adding that the Leader of the Opposition seemed to be indulging in his usual political antics and theatrics, without any sense of the state's history or any realisation of the possible consequences of his act.

Khaira had on Friday extended support to the referendum 2020. He had asserted that Sikhs had the right to demand justice against "atrocities" they have suffered. Khaira, however, insisted that he believes in a united India.

Earlier in the day, Khaira tweeted, "Although I’m not a votary of 2020 referendum seeking a separate homeland for Sikhs but I don’t hesitate to say that it’s a result of a consistent policy of bias, discrimination and persecution of Sikhs ever since partition, be it attack on Darbar Sahib, genocide of Sikhs in 1984."

The Akali Dal also question Delhi chief minister and AAP chief if he supported the statement of Khaira.

Punjab referendum according to campaign website is "A campaign to liberate Punjab, currently occupied by India. The campaign aims to gage the will of the Punjabi people with regards to reestablishing Punjab as a nation state."
