Can Bengaluru Become Resilient to Garbage?

Bengaluru is one of three Indian cities -Surat and Chennai being the other two -for the 100 Resilient Cities challenge, a $100 million initiative of the US-based Rockefeller Foundation. While Surat has already appointed a Chief Resilience Officer, Bengaluru is yet to cope with its day-to-day problems posed by 4,000 tonnes of garbage the city produces every day.

A Rockefeller delegation was in Bengaluru last week, and City Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy told them that garbage is the city's biggest resilience challenge. Based on the civic body's request, the government Monday appointed IAS officer Subodh Yadav as its special commissioner for solid waste management.
