The Calcutta High Court on Thursday disqualified BJP leader Mukul Roy from West Bengal Assembly under anti-defection law.

The verdict, according to leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari, who had moved the court , is "a victory of the Indian Constitution".

The division bench of Debanshu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi today disqualified Roy as a legislator. More than four years ago, Roy had defected to the Trinamool Congress after winning an Assembly seat on a BJP ticket from Krishnanagar Uttar in 2021. The court observed that Roy "is declared to have become disqualified in terms of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India and the Rules of 1986 with effect from June 11, 2021".

The court said Roy is "declared to have suffered disqualification with effect from June 11, 2021".
