The CAG of India has detected various anomalies in Meghalaya's Transport department such as vehicles being registered before actually purchased.

SHILLONG: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has detected various anomalies in Meghalaya's Transport department such as vehicles being registered before actually purchased and Transport department registering vehicles on Sundays and National holidays.

Such and various other anomalies were detected by the CAG in its performance review of Meghalaya's Transport Department for the year 2006-07.

Lack of an effective documentation system in the department has unearthed discrepancies that could enable stolen vehicles to be registered and commit various other insurance irregularities and crimes, the CAG said in its report published recently.

The IT audit of the department's documents revealed that the data registration of 1,748 vehicles as entered in the data base was prior to the date of purchase of the vehicles, and the number of days the vehicle were shown as registered prior to their purchases ranged from 1 day to 100 years, the CAG report said.

The report further said that while registration of vehicles is0don0only0on0working0days, the data showed that 55 vehicles were registered on Sundays, two on Republic Day, five on Independence Day, seven on Gandhi Jayanti and four on Christmas Day.

Further seating capacity of two-wheelers were show to be between 3 to 259. In a few instances, a Fiat Palio car was shown to be a 985-seater vehicle and a Maruti Gypsy 87-seater.
