Cabinet rejig? PM Narendra Modi calls meet for 'self appraisals'

Highlights

  • Reshuffle of Union Cabinet likely before next parliament session
  • Ministers asked to present self-appraisal reports
  • Poll bound Punjab, UP may find more representation post reshuffle
NEW DELHI: Amid speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle, PM Narendra Modi has asked ministers to present “self appraisal” report at a meeting scheduled for June 30.

A top government source said the ministers have been asked to make a presentation to the PM about their performance since the BJP government presented its second budget. The meeting has come at a time when speculation is rife about a possible cabinet reshuffle before the monsoon session of Parliament with focus on giving representation to states such as UP and Punjab which are scheduled to go for assembly polls next year.

“There was talk that the June 30 meeting may be an appraisal exercise that can lead to a cabinet reshuffle,” said a source. The PM has been reviewing the performance of his ministers periodically with focus on fast-tracking implementation of key government schemes to ensure a visible impact on the ground before the next round of crucial state polls.

An official said a “bitter but healthy” competition is going on among the ministries and departments to get the best rating on the MyGov portal.
