Cabinet meeting today to decide on AFSPA in Kashmir

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will meet on Monday to take a call on the demand for partial withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from trouble-torn Jammu and Kashmir.

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will meet on Monday to take a call on the demand for partial withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from trouble-torn Jammu and Kashmir.

However, a decision is not going to be easy as violence is escalating in the Valley.

The Army, which maintains that this move could lead to a section pinning the blame for the troubles in the Valley on it, has already struck a dissenting note. It was the Army’s reluctance that has been prompting a section within Congress, particularly defence minister A K Antony, to advice caution.
