New Delhi: The Indian Railways and the Department for International Development (DFID) under the UK government have agreed for energy planning for the national transporter in the fields of solar and wind energy, fuel efficient, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave it’s post-facto approval for inking of MoU on Wednesday.

Both Railways and DFID, subject to the laws, rules, regulations and national policies from time-to-time in force governing the subject matter in their respective countries, endeavour to take necessary steps to enable energy efficiency and energy self-sufficiency for Indian Railways, an official statement said. The MoU was signed on December 2, 2019.

“The objective of the programme is to support structural reforms and the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid. To be more specific, it aims to achieve more sustainable and inclusive economic growth, better energy security and reduced carbon emissions,” the statement said.
