CAA will not bring new refugees: Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Saturday said only 5 lakh people would be eligible to apply for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

He said the CAA would not bring any new refugees from Bangladesh. If more people than that apply, the minister said, he would quit politics.

Sarma said after Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014, minorities in Bangladesh have not faced atrocities.


Assam is facing a massive anti-CAA protest since December 9 as the residents fear the CAA would grant citizenship to a large number of Bangladeshi immigrants, which might dilute their culture and language.
