LUCKNOW: Factors like defection and caste are going to play a crucial role in deciding the electoral fortunes of the candidates for the three assembly seats going to polls on Saturday.
Bilgram, Colonelganj and Moradnagar -- where ruling BSP has put its prestige at stake.
Elections were necessitated in Colonelganj and Moradnagar due to defection of the winning candidates and in Bilgram due to death of the elected representative.
In Colonelganj seat of Gonda, Ajay Pratap alias Lalla Bhaiya won assembly elections last year on a Congress ticket but resigned this year to join BSP, which has now fielded his sister Brij Singh from the seat.
Singh, who is a first timer in politics is banking on the BSP vote bank. Lalla Bahaiya had won this seat three times on BJP ticket, as an independent and as a Congress candidate.
Amidst allegation that BSP was misusing official machinery to ensure success of its candidate, Singh is also facing a piquant situation due to defection of her brother, termed "unreliable" by opposition parties especially Congress.
Samajwadi Party has fielded Yogesh Pratap Singh, a Thakur while Congress and BJP have given tickets to Brahmin candidates --Rama Mishra and KK Shukla respectively.
Winning this seat has become an issue of prestige for Congress after its MLA defected and its candidate Mishra is trying to exploit the sentiments of people and gain their sympathy.
