Bureaucrats won't be able to use double accommodation

Maharashtra govt has decided to make it compulsory for bureaucrats who own flats on land at concessional rates, to surrender them if they have been allotted official accommodation.

MUMBAI: The Vilasrao Deshmukh-led government has decided to make it compulsory for bureaucrats who own flats on land provided by the government at a concessional rate, to surrender them if they have been allotted official accommodation.

Due to the shortage of official accommodation, it has become extremely difficult to accommodate government employees which has necessitated this measure, a senior official said.

The decision may become unpopular but is necessary and has been taken to ease the acute shortage of government accommodation in the city, he said.

The move comes in the backdrop of several instances of IAS,IPS and gazetted officers occupying government quarters in posh areas like Malabar Hill, Worli, Haji Ali and Peddar Road even as they lease their own flats on lucrative rents.

The practice allowed these officers a double subsidy -- government accommodation and personal flats on prime land allotted to them at a nominal rate. It was felt that if they wanted to stay in the official government residence, they should surrender their own flats to the government. They will be entitled to rent as per government rules, the official said.
