Bullet fired at Mamata's convoy

Trinamool Congress on Sunday alleged a bullet was fired from a CPI(M) office at the convoy of its supremo Mamata Banerjee when she was travelling in a car in violence-hit Nandigram.

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress on Sunday alleged a bullet was fired from a CPI(M) office at the convoy of its supremo Mamata Banerjee when she was travelling in a car in violence-hit Nandigram.

"A bullet was fired from a gun at the convoy of Mamata Banerjee but it fell short of the car she was travelling in," Trinamool Congress MLA Subhendu Adhikary said.

He alleged the bullet was fired from a CPI (M) party office at Sherkhan chowk near Tekhali bridge as she was travelling from Nandigram to Khejuri, a CPI (M) stronghold, to meet the family members of a TC supporter who died yesterday.

"We have recovered the empty cartridge," he claimed. However, IGP (law and order) Raj Kanojia said "our people there have not reported any such incident".

Banerjee sat on a dharna on the road at Gokulnagar immediately after the incident in protest against the incident and demanded West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's resignation.

The Trinamool Congress leadership demanded immediate intervention of the Centre in view of the alleged attack on their leader and continued violence in Nandigram.

Violence in Nandigram had broken out in January over the government's plan to acquire land there for a mega chemical hub. The plan was shelved by the Chief Minister after the death of 14 persons in police firing on March 14 in the area.
