NEW DELHI: The UP police on Thursday arrested Prashant Natt, the main accused in the killing of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh in Bulandshahr on December 3. Police said he has confessed to shooting Singh after snatching the latter’s pistol. That licensed pistol is still to be recovered.

ET was the first to report on Wednesday that Natt had emerged as the prime suspect in the killing, with UP’s Additional Director General (Law and Order) Anand Kumar confirming the same and saying raids were on to nab him. “Natt, the main accused in the killing of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh has been arrested and he has confessed to having fired the shot that killed Singh. We are interrogating him,” Bulandshahr SSP Prabhakar Chaudhary said. Natt, who drives a taxi in Delhi, was nabbed from Greater Noida and will be produced before a court in Bulandshahar on Friday.

Police say they also have video footage and testimonies of other accused persons who have named Natt to be the one who shot at the inspector. These testimonies are from four other arrested accused, namely Rahul, Johnny, Lokendra and David, who say Natt shot the inspector and then threw the pistol to run away. All these five people were seen close to the police jeep when Kumar was shot dead. Natt’s name had not featured among the 27 accused in the FIR lodged after the incident.

Bajrang Dal member Yogesh Raj and an Army man, Jeetu Fauji, were earlier suspected to have pulled the trigger. But ADG Kumar told ET on Wednesday that Raj and Jeetu were not involved in the murder. Police believe the killing of the inspector followed in a surcharged atmosphere after a protestor named Sumit got shot and succumbed to his injuries.
