Budget 2014: What other politicians were into during FM Arun Jaitley's speech

Ek, do: Throughout the FM's presentation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept himself busy by reading the Hindi version of Jaitley's speech. After the speech was over and the House adjourned, Modi waited for his turn to congratulate his Finance Minister. No. 1 appreciated No. 2?

WOKEN UP: A day after being caught napping in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi was seen furiously scribbling away in a notebook. Sitting next to his mother Sonia, he had the expression of a person sitting for a tough exam.

FAMILY MAN: Arun Jaitley's wife Sangeeta and daughter Sonali sat in the visitors' gallery to watch the budget presentation. Later, they fielded questions from the electronic media outside Parliament House. Yez, both Mrs and Ms Jaitley praised the budget.

SHOUTERS: Strained relations between TMC and BJP members resurfaced during the Budget presentation. Kalyan Banerjee and Sultan Ahmed of the TMC forced Jaitley to stop his speech a few times by shouting their their demands. What was their complaint? That the FM had given West Bengal the short shrift. The only other members who were louder were from Telengana.

CONGRESS TIPS: A BJP union minister who was explaining some nuances of the Budget to reporters was interrupted by a Congress leader who was a minister in the erstwhile UPA government. The latter told him not to worry much as the NDA government still had five years before the next elections. "You should start defending government policies in the fifth year before facing polls," was his expert tip.

SLEEPERS: Rahul Gandhi wasn't the only one prone to dozing off in the Lok Sabha. HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Minister for the North-East VK Singh were among those who were caught catching their 40 winks as Jaitley droned on.
