KOLKATA: A proposal by the empowered Group of Ministers for direct purchase of land for SEZs was on Friday opposed by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
Bhattacharjee said he had written a letter to the EGoM's chairman, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, expressing the state government's reservations on the issue.
"We have already expressed objections to the direct purchase of land for SEZs," he told reporters.
He said the government's intervention was required to safeguard the interests of farmers so that they could get a reasonable price for their land.
The transfer of land should be done through lease agreements, Bhattacharjee said.
