Buddhadeb hopeful of sixth schedule amendment

WB govt expected the Parliament to pass the Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill in its next session bringing the three Darjeeling Hills sub-divisions under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government expected the Parliament to pass the Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill in its next session bringing the three Darjeeling Hills sub-divisions under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said in the assembly today.

Replying to a calling attention motion of Gorkha National Liberation Front member Santa Chetri, the chief minister said a tripartite agreement for this, involving the Centre, the state government and the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, was signed on December six in Delhi.

Pointing out that the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council was working 'legally' in the hills since 1988, the chief minister said the Amendment Bill, once enacted, would grant Constitutional recognition to it.
