Buddha urges Advani to ask Mamata to end her fast
West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has urged former deputy Prime Minister and BJP leader L.K.Advani to request Trinamool Congress MP Mamata Banerjee to end her fast.
Mamata continued her hunger strike for the eighth consecutive day on Monday. She has been railing against acquisition of multi-crop farmland by the Left Front government in the state and alleged police excesses against farmers of Singur.
Mr Bhattacharjee had earlier written to Mamata, requesting her to end her fast. On why he had urged Mr Advani to persuade Mamata, the chief minister said: “I had a discussion with Mr Advani on the Singur issue. In fact, he had contacted me and wished to discuss the Singur developments. The issue of Mamata’s fast cropped up during our discussions, which is when I urged him to presuade her.”
Mr Bhattacharjee had gone to Delhi on Friday to attend the meeting of the National Development Council (NDC). During his stay in the capital, he has spoken with the former deputy Prime Minister.
Veteran CPIM leader Jyoti Basu and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has already urged Mamata to end her fast and hold talks with the government on Singur. Left Front chairman Biman Bose has also made several appeals to the Trinamool leader.
When contacted, Mamata told newspersons: “The government is acquiring land at Singur forcibly. I will not tolerate this and will continue my fast until and unless it stops acquiring land and the Tatas relocate their venue.”
“I am fine, though I have some chest pain. I will continue the fast till my demands are met. Our party has conducted a survey on Singur land which revealed that the owners of 400 acres gave their consent to the government to acquire thei land. Rest of the land was acquired by force,” she said.
Mamata also announced that Trinamool workers would organise a blockade near Metro cinema where she is on fast for an indefinite period from December 15. “I will go to Delhi on December 20 and after my return, I will be here again and continue my fast,” the Trinamool chief announced.
