Buddha should hardsell WB to attract FDI: Japan

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should personally lead a delegation to Japan to remove misconceptions about the state which persisted among investors there, Japanese Consul General Motoyoshi Noro said here today.

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should personally lead a delegation to Japan to remove misconceptions about the state which persisted among investors there, Japanese Consul General Motoyoshi Noro said here today.
Pointing out that there was no reason why West Bengal could not attract investment beyond the petrochemicals and automotive sector, Noro said the chief minister should hardsell the state to Japan to attract FDI.
He said, "Buddhadeb is very important name as it is synonymous with the name of Lord Buddha. He should personally visit with a delegation to remove misconceptions about the state which still persist among a section of Japanese investors."
Noro also said that Japan was keen to offer loan assistance for major infrastructural projects like connecting rural and urban Bengal and even financing the National Freight Corridor proposed by Indian Railways.
"We are interested in Rs 22,500 crore freight corridor project financing. The feasibility report is expected in October this year," Noro said.
Japan was open to providing finance for development of Haldia Port which was the closest to Japan, where due to lack of quality infrastructure most ships headed to Mumbai, Noro said.
West Bengal has attracted Mitsuibishi PTA with Rs 3,000 crore in FDI, one of the largest from Japan in India.
Total Japanese FDI in India is USD 2.12 billion, representing 6.6 per cent of the aggregate FDI in India.
Noro was speaking at the Bharat Chamber of Commerce Noro.
