BSY orders judicial probe

The B S Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka has instituted judicial probe into the communal violence, within a day of ordering a COD inquiry into the communal clashes.

BANGALORE: Jittery over the Congress-led UPA regimes move to invoke Article 355 over the series of attacks against churches and other prayer halls of Christians in coastal Karnataka and other districts since Sunday, the B S Yeddyurappa-led BJP government has instituted judicial probe within a day of ordering a COD inquiry into the communal clashes.

The chief minister, who took the unusual step of personally briefing the media on the decisions taken at the state cabinet meeting on Thursday, had vehemently opposed questions on ordering a judicial probe by asserting that the government had full confidence in the COD on its competence to conduct an impartial inquiry and submit a comprehensive report within two months as directed.

However, the government apparently developed cold feet when there were indications from Delhi regarding Centres move to invoke Article 355. When the Union home ministry sent an advisory to the state, the government promptly plunged into damage-control mode and Yeddyurappa announced the institution of a judicial probe from Ankola in the morning.
