BSF, villagers joint patrolling to check influx

BSF troops and villagers will carry out joint patrolling in the Indo-Bangla border areas in Meghalaya to enhance the survellience and check infiltration and crimes from across the border.

SHILLONG: BSF troops and villagers will carry out joint patrolling in the Indo-Bangla border areas in Meghalaya to enhance the survellience and check infiltration and crimes from across the border.

The idea was floated during a meeting of village headmen and BSF officials recently. BSF DIG P K Purkayastha said village defence parties will be formed in the villages who will assist the BSF troops during patrolling.

The BSF will provide basic training, uniforms and torches to the VDP volunteers. "The exercise will enhance the border management and help deal with security problems and crimes like intrusion, smuggling,'' the DIG said.

The meeting also decided to set up gates in certain places in order to facilitate smooth movement of villagers in the border areas.

''It is difficult to check illegal infiltration without the help of the local villagers. We need to build a healthy cooperation with the locals to prevent the illegal movement of intruders that is posing a threat to the region,'' Purkayastha added.
