British PM urges Sudan to cooperate with ICC
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday urged Sudan to cooperate with the International Criminal Court, just before its prosecutor sought President Omar al-Beshir's arrest for alleged warcrimes and genocide.
Speaking at his monthly press conference at his Downing Street office moments before the formal announcement, Brown stressed that the ICC had British support.
Its prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has formally called for Beshir to be held in connection with genocide, crimes against humanity and warcrimes in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.
Brown said it was too early to comment specifically but added: "We call on the government of Sudan to cooperate with the International Criminal Court.
"The International Criminal Court has our support for its activities. "We have raised with the Sudanese government the need to cooperate with the International Criminal Court. The foreign secretary raised this with the Sudanese president on July 9."
Khartoum, which rejects the ICC's jurisdiction and refuses to surrender two war crimes suspects already named, has warned that the move could threaten peace efforts.
