Britain donates over Rs 8 cr for Bihar flood victims

Britain on Wednesday announced a grant of one million pounds for the relief of those affected by the Kosi river floods in Bihar.

LONDON: Britain on Wednesday announced a grant of one million pounds for the relief of those affected by the Kosi river floods in Bihar.

This is in addition to the 150,000 pounds announced earlier by the British government.

The Department for International Development has provided UNICEF with "1 million pounds (Rs 8.5 crore) in support of relief activities for the millions affected by the flooding of the Kosi river in South Asia. This is in addition to an initial contribution of 150,000 pounds a fortnight ago," a press statement said here.

The funding will be used to provide nutrition, clean water and sanitation, health services and shelter 125,000 displaced people in the flood-ravaged state.

"In changing course, the Kosi river has cased a trail of destructoon across India and ����...����hat has affected millions of people. These people could be stranded for several months in different conditions," Secretary of State for International Development Douglas Alexander said.

"This extra contribution of 1 million pounds will help UNICEF to deliver the food, shelter and sanitation so urgently needed," he said.
