Breakfast over, lunch menu still undecided

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress’ next move over Singur remained undecided on Friday, a day after after party leader Mamata Banerjee broke her 25-day hunger strike. But Mamata’s arch-rival CPM isn’t sitting idle. On Friday, the ruling party held its secretariat meeting to finalise strategies to handle Singur development, specially in the wake of th\e end of fast by Mamata Banerjee.

For starters, CPM has asked its legislative wing to initiate measures to send an all-party delegation to Singur to assess the situation there. The CPM also invited Ms Banerjee to attend the meeting with the government on Singur issue.

“We want Mamata to recover soon and hold talks with the government on the Singur development,” veteran CPIM leader Jyoti Basu told newspersons on Friday afternoon. Left Front chairman Biman Bose also echoed Mr Basu.

But it’s undecided when the all-party legislative team will visit Singur and the role it will play in ending unresolved issues over the Singur devlopments.

Meanwhile, a Trinamool Congress delegation led by opposition leader Partha Chatterjee visited Singur on Friday. The team was not prevented by the police from entering Singur even though the prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC was in force.

Incidenatally, according to the medical bulletin of NG Nursing Home, where the Trinamool leader has been admitted, Ms Banerjee was administered urgent ivy fluids, glucose, electrolytes, minerals and the vitamin replacement process has been started. The bulletin notes some degree of liver disfunction as well. She is said to be under close observation for 72 hours.

Accordingly, since Mamata is indisposed and not in a position to decide her next course of action, it is unknown when her party will meet the state government to clear the muddle over Singur. By taking advantage of the situation, all the four Left parties — CPM, CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP — decided to hold their politburo meetings in Kolkata from the first day of 2007.

“Our polit bureau will meet in Kolkata on January 1 followed by central committee meetings on January 2,3 and 4,” CPM polit bureau member Biman Bose said on Friday. It is learnt that forthcoming assembly elections in four states will be the main agenda for the CPM polit bureau and central committee meetings.

Central committee meetings of the three other Left parties will also be held in Kolkata between January 1 and 9. It is learnt that all Left parties will discuss the issue of land acquisition for urbanisation and industrialisation during their meetings in Kolkata.
