NEW DELHI: India could get a break from the scorching heat towards the middle of next week, as temperatures are likely to normalize on account of rainfall and thunderstorm activity in most regions, the weather office has said.

Many parts of the country have been witnessing a spell of heat wave, with temperatures rising up to 48 degrees Celsius in Central India. Maximum temperatures in the region are likely to be 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal for another week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

IMD in a fortnight's weather forecast issued on Thursday said that maximum temperatures are likely to be lower than the current temperatures during the second week of June.

"No major heat wave spell is expected over any part of the country during week 2 (June 7-15)," the met office added.

The maximum temperatures are very likely to be above 40°C over plains of northwest India and Central and adjoining east & south Peninsular India during the next week, IMD said.

The weather office said that few places in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will continue to witness heat wave conditions over the next one week.

With conditions becoming favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into more parts of southern peninsula, northeast India and the state of Maharashtra within the next one week, rainfall and thunderstorm activity in the adjoining areas is likely to offer a respite from the heat spell the country has been witnessing over the past couple of weeks.

The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 29, three days ahead of its June 1st schedule.
