Brahmaputra Mail derails, many injured
Seven bogies of the Down Brahmaputra Mail derailed near Jalpaiguri late on Sunday. The bogies were flung at least 20 metres away.
Though the number of casualties could not be confirmed immediately, nearly 50 people are believed injured.
The train, which had set out from Guwahati, was headed for New Delhi when the incident occurred between Rangapani and Nijbari stations around 11.15 pm. Sources said there is no water body or bridge in the vicinity. Nijbari is about 15 km from New Jalpaiguri station.
Locals swung into action at once, helping rescue the injured. They were joined by North East Frontier Railway officials. A relief train was sent from New Jalpaiguri station.
Tek Bahadur, assistant commercial superintendent of NEFR, said a medical team was rushed to the area. "Reports are still coming in, but we have not been informed about any deaths," T K Rabha, chief PRO, said from Maligaon.
Brahmaputra Mail made headlines on August 1, 1999, when at least 400 passengers (mainly military personnel) died after the train hit the stationary Awadh-Assam Express head-on at Gaisal, around 100 km from Siliguri.
