KOLKATA: Bosnia and Herzegovina expects to join the European Union by next year, a top official of the south-east European nation said today.

"We hope to get a solution to the issues in the next few months. I expect, we will be able to join the EU by next year," Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sead Avdic said at an interactive session with BNCCI members.

He said among the conditions that needed to be fulfilled to join the EU are adoption of greater human rights to offer a greater political role to minority communities.

Avdic said that the country is looking at greater trade cooperation in infrastructure and tourism as major focus areas.

The bilateral trade between Bosnia and India is currently pegged at USD 50 million, which is expected to get a boost after the country joined the EU.

A free trade agreement is underway with EU to boost trade between European countries and India.
