Bootleg liquor kills at least 12 on tea plantation as dozens fall ill

Spurious liquor claimed at least 12 tea workers in Assam’s Golaghat district. The toll, according to officials, is likely to go up. A senior government official, who didn't want to be named, claimed that around 100 people had consumed the liquor in Salmira tea estate.

Local MLA Mrinal Saikia rushed to Golaghat, which is around 300 km away from Guwahati.

He blamed the excise department for the tragedy. Congress has sought the resignation of excise minister Parimal Suklabaidya.


Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, sought an inquiry into the tragedy.

Around 27 people have been referred to the Jorhat Medical College for better treatment, the condition of some of them is stated to be serious.
