Bodoland people's front severe ties with BJP and decides to join Congress led grand alliance: BPF chief

Ruling BJP’s estranged ally Bodoland people's front (BPF) has decided to severe ties with the BJP and has joined Congress led grand alliance to fight the assembly polls.

BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary tweeted, “To work for Peace, Unity and Development the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has decided to join hands with MAHAJATH in the forthcoming Assam Assembly Election. We shall no longer maintain friendship or alliance with BJP”.

Congress along with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha formed grand alliance for Assam polls.


BPF general secretary Prabin Boro told ET, “We will join anti BJP formation. Joining Grand alliance does not mean we will maintain distance from the regional front.”

Regional front is led by Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal.

BJP has decided to fight the polls in Bodoland area in alliance with new ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

BJP together with UUPL is ruling the sixth schedule council of Bodoland territorial council (BTC).

BPF had three ministers in the council of ministers in Assam. The relationship between BPF and BJP turned bitter and both parties fought the recently held elections in the sixth schedule council BTC separately.

In 2006 and 2011 BPF was part of the congress led government in Assam, in 2014 before Lok Sabha polls the party parted ways from congress.

BPF leaders claim that its support ensured that BJP won as many as 27 assembly seats in2016 polls. BPF has won all the 12 seats of Bodoland in 2016.
