BMC lays down the law for social distancing as Mumbai's slowed down by coronavirus

The Maharashtra government on Friday announced more restrictions, just short of a shut down in the state. The measures included shutting down of all non essential services in the state including private offices.

Following Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s orders to close down all private offices in the state, the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) released a fresh set of orders for social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

What’s open/allowed in the city:
  • Drinking water providers
  • Restaurants, eateries and dhabas with 50% capacity
  • Sewage services
  • Internet, telephone service providers
  • Banking services, RBI
  • Stock exchange
  • Groceries and food sellers
  • Rail and transport service
  • Petrol pumps and electricity providers
  • Hospitals and pharmacies
  • Media houses
  • IT services necessary for any of the essential operations above
  • Port
  • Ecommerce of all essential goods including food and pharma
What’s closed/not allowed:
  • All private and corporate establishments not providing essential services
  • No mass congregations or events
  • Schools
  • Cinema halls
  • Swimming pools
  • Gyms
  • Malls
  • Spas
  • Bars, pubs, discotheques
  • Amusement parks
Failure to comply will result in penalisation under section 188 of the Penal Code, the BMC said in the order.
