In the state capital, 1,700 candidates are vying for 227 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which manages an annual budget of over Rs 74,400 crore. The civic polls are being held after a delay of almost four years, caused by prolonged legal and administrative challenges.

In Mumbai, the civic polls have turned into a high-stakes contest between the Thackeray brothers, who have come together after nearly 20 years in an attempt to reclaim their political legacy, and the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance.
Mumbai BMC Election Live Updates:
- Counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections begins at 10 am today.
- Mumbai recorded a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, lower than the 55.53 per cent turnout in the 2017 civic polls, officials said on Friday (January 16, 2026).
- The civic body has stated that all counting centres will remain under round-the-clock surveillance.
- Continuous CCTV monitoring and adequate police presence will be in place at all venues to ensure security.
- Vote counting will take place at 23 designated counting centres across Mumbai.
- Each counting centre will function under the supervision of a Returning Officer appointed by the Election Commission.
BMC elections in 2017
The previous BMC election in 2017 was fought when Shiv Sena and the BJP were still allies and emerged as the principal rivals. Control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has long been crucial for the Thackeray family’s influence in the city. In a significant political development, estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have reunited for the BMC polls after two decades.
