NEW DELHI: The battle for the Sheila Dikshit’s seat has turned even more interesting as BJP decided to field a strong contender, former state unit president Vijendra Gupta, against her. According to a source, Gupta, who has been an MCD councillor for over two decades, was informed of the decision just minutes before the official announcement was made. Aam Admi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal will also contest elections from the New Delhi seat.

BJP declared a list of 62 candidates on Tuesday and the announcement on contenders for the final eight seats is expected in the next few days. The party’s chief ministerial candidate will contest from his present seat, Kirshna Nagar. Party president Vijay Goel’s name did not figure on the list as he has been promised a role in national politics.

Almost all sitting MLAs have been given tickets to contest elections again. Although OP Babbar and VK Malhotra are the only MLAs not contesting elections this time, their tickets have been given to their family members.
