NEW DELHI: BJP member of Parliament from Saharanpur, Raghav Lakhanpal, has decided to adopt the riot-hit Shabbirpur village under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. Lakhanpal says he wants to give the village “a healing touch.”

“The unfortunate events in Shabbirpur have led to lot of bitterness among the Thakurs and Dalits. I have decided to adopt the village as an MP under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana to give the healing touch. I have been visiting there and my concept is going to be more than bringing development works like roads and drains to Shabbirpur,” Lakhanpal told ET.

He explained that his aim is also to ensure that people of various castes and communities live in peace and harmony in the village. “I feel conflicts need not go out of the village and reach police. Problems should be amicably solved inside the village,” he said.

Under the programme launched by PM Modi in 2014, all MPs were supposed to adopt a village each in their constituency to transform it by 2016 and adopt two more villages with a target to make them ‘model villages’ by 2019.
