BJP's partner IPFT decides to support TIPRA for Autonomous District Council elections

Hinting at possible rift partner, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) a partner in the BJP led coalition ruling Tripura has decided to support Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections.

Led by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman TIPRA is a newly formed political party. Along with Pradyot Kishore, IPFT president and Revenue Minister N C Debbarman and general secretary and Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kr Jamatia informed media persons in lines with other indigenous parties.

IPFT has also extended the support to TIPRA for Greater Tipraland.


Greater Tipraland is one of the main demand of TIPRA.Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) had supported the call of TIPRA and announced to fight from a single platform to ADC poll.

IPFT leaders claimed that they are still with the BJP led government and part of BJP floated platform Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) however, supporting TIPRA in the interest of the indegenious people.

Mevar Kr Jamatia said, “We are with the government. Our support to Pradyot is for unity and development of Tripura".

A senior leader who did not want to be named said that, "Earlier IPFT wanted 22 seats in the ADC however there was no response from BJP."

BJP in alliance with Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura won the 2018 assembly polls defeating the Left Front. In the 60-member assembly, BJP has 36 seats and the IPFT eight and CPM 16.
