New Delhi: BJP president JP Nadda on Monday appointed Bhupendra Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnaw as election in-charge of Maharashtra, where assembly polls are due in a few months. The party appointed point men for Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir polls too.

BJP's early appointments for the assembly polls come after its relatively poor performance in 2024, vis-a-vis 2019 Lok Sabha polls, in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand.

BJP could win only nine Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, compared to 23 it won in 2019. NDA's total tally is 17 out of 48 in the state. Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Bhupendra Yadav have worked together for the Bihar assembly elections. Yadav was the party in-charge while Fadnavis was made election in-charge of the state.


Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and former Tripura CM Biplav Kumar Deb have been appointed as election in-charge for Haryana. Pradhan has a track record of election management in UP in 2022. Deb is in charge of Haryana and has been made campaign in-charge. BJP lost five seats in the just-concluded LS polls in Haryana, after winning all 10 last time.

In Jharkhand, agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will be election in-charge. In the 14 LS seats in the state, BJP won eight while ally All Jharkhand Students Union won one. In 2009, BJP won 11 and AJSU one. For Jammu and Kashmir, Nadda has appointed Union minister G Kishan Reddy as election in-charge.
