Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for taking contradictory political positions in Delhi and in the southern state, accusing his party of "compromising" on constitutional and secular values for political alliances in the state.

In a statement, Chandrasekhar said Gandhi frequently raised issues concerning the Constitution, democracy, secularism and the rights of women and youth in Delhi, but the Congress in Keralam had adopted a different approach.

He alleged that the Congress had entered into an open political alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami in Keralam, despite the organisation's alleged anti-constitutional and anti-secular positions and its role in the anarchy in Bangladesh.

The BJP leader also referred to past statements by ministers belonging to the Congress' ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), alleging that they had openly declared that their sole objective was "religion, religion and religion."

Chandrasekhar said Gandhi spoke about the future of India's youth, but the Congress in Keralam had refused to implement the PM SHRI scheme, aimed at providing better education to underprivileged children, allegedly succumbing to pressure from the IUML.

He further alleged that while Gandhi championed the cause of women's rights and fundamental freedoms elsewhere, his political alliance in Keralam included forces that wanted to curtail women's rights and confine them to their homes.

The BJP president also accused the Congress in the state of supporting what he described as "unconstitutional Muslim reservation", even as Gandhi frequently invoked the Constitution and fundamental rights in his political speeches.

Questioning the Congress' alleged contrasting positions, Chandrasekhar asked how Gandhi could speak about constitutional values in Delhi while his party pursued a different course in Keralam.

Describing this as deceptive politics, he said the contrasting positions had exposed what he termed the political duplicity of Gandhi and the Congress and the alleged corruption within the party.
