BJP welcomes Centre's decision on Karnataka

The BJP on Wednesday welcomed the Centre's decision to revoke President's Rule in Karnataka but said the step lacked "grace" because it came after "inordinate and unnecessary" delay.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Thursday welcomed the Centre's decision to revoke President's Rule in Karnataka but said the step lacked "grace" because it came after "inordinate and unnecessary" delay.

It hoped Governor Rameshwar Thakur would immediately invite BJP Legislative Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for formation of the saffron party's first-ever government in South India.

"It is a historic day because the BJP is getting an opportunity to form its government in South India, especially in the politically important state of Karnataka," party Vice President Yashwant Sinha said.

Sinha, who is in charge of the state, sought to downplay fresh irritants in the BJP-JDS combine and said the coalition government will work for the welfare of Karnataka and make its capital Bangalore a world-class city.

Asked about the flip flop by JD-S led by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, he said the coalition will learn lessons from the past experience and pointed out that JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy has made it clear that its support to BJP is unconditional.

On the Centre's delay, he said "it was avoidable" as the Union Government could have asked Governor to take a decision as soon as JDS Legislative Party leader Kumaraswamy gave him the letter of support to the BJP.

"It could have been done in three days instead of 13 days. I feel the decision could have been taken more speedily and with grace," he said, noting that the Centre's "late realisation lacked grace".
