BJP urges PM for waiver for MPs to donate from MPLAD funds

NEW DELHI : In view of the present flood situation in Bihar, the BJP on Tuesday suggested to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that MPs should be permitted to utilise their MPLAD funds outside their constituencies.
"BJP would like to recommend that a one time relaxation should be ordered in the existing stipulation that MPs are not permitted to utilise the MPLAD funds outside their constituencies," BJP President Rajnath Singh said in a letter to the Prime Minister.
"It may be recalled that such an exemption was indeed given during the Gujarat earthquake and the Tsunami calamity. The dimensions of the Bihar flood crisis are such that a similar relaxation is urgently called for," Singh said.
The saffron party also made a beginning in this regard with Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad donating Rs 25 Lakh from his MPLAD fund to the flood victims.
While donating this money to the Bihar Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Prasad appealed to the Lok Sabha Speaker and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha to take all steps so that MPs from other states could also contribute from the MPLAD funds.
It will also adopt one of the flood-affected villages and nurture it back to normalcy. Chief Ministers of BJP and NDA-ruled states have also contributed to the relief for flood victims.
