In September, the Shiromani Akali Dal, the oldest ally of the BJP, had walked out of the ruling alliance at the Centre over the farm bills. Thereafter the BJP started working on strengthening itself in order to contest all 117 assembly seats in the state in 2022. However, the farmers’ protest, which was earlier going on in Punjab, has now shifted to Delhi and spread to other states too.
BJP members said the party is hopeful that some positive will come out of the talks between the government and the farmers and that this would help the party expand its base in Punjab.
“Earlier we were going and sharing with farmers how these bills were good for them. Now, because talks are on between the farmers and the government, we are not making any statement on this,” Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma told ET.
