BJP to contest BMC elections on 72 seats

A second list for the remaining 28 seats would be released on Saturday, BJP city unit president Prakash Mehta informed.

MUMBAI: A day after it announced an alliance with the Shiv Sena for the BMC polls, the BJP on Friday came out with a first list of nominees for 44 civic wards.

A second list for the remaining 28 seats would be released on Saturday, BJP city unit president Prakash Mehta informed. The BJP is contesting 72 seats and the Shiv Sena 155.

BJP’s first list of nominees reiterates party’s commitment to raising emotive issues when an election is round the corner. It makes no secret of the fact that the BJP wants to address local constituency as there are 23 Marathi-speaking nominees in the list. BJP’s popularity with the local Gujarati community finds a reflection in 9 nominees and the North Indian population has also got an equal representation. The list has five advocates and two doctors. The 44 nominees include 18 women.

The presence of a good number of Gujarati and North Indian nominees on the BJP list explains the party’s return to Hindutva plank. BJP has also planned to bring its Hindutva mascot and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for a rally with Shiv Sena patriarch Balasaheb Thackeray.

Among 44, the BJP has re-nominated 15 sitting corporators. Mr Mehta said the party would re-nominate all sitting corporators. Some of the sitting BJP corporators have, however, been adversely hit by the delimitation of wards which has either altered the ward boundaries or divided one ward into two or three. Mr Mehta said such sitting corporators would be accommodated in other wards.
