BJP to Cong: From Lal salam to dalal salam
The BJP joined the attempts to widen the morality deficit for the UPA with capitulating to unwholesome interests for continuing in power. “From lal Salam to dalal salam,” was how Mr Advani described the Congress’ change.
Mr Advani, who was scathing in his attack on the prime minister, said the government led by Mr Manmohan Singh is more than willing to appease private interests and personal agendas. The Left parties on Sunday levelled the same charges against the prime minister.
The attack also comes in the backdrop of allegations that state agencies and officials are being used for intimidating inconvenient political leaders and opinions. There have also been reports that political considerations would weigh in while deciding on senior bureaucratic appointments.
On its part, the BJP has made it clear that it will not indulge in any power game against the Centre. The party has also rebuffed attempts by smaller parties to touch base with the leadership. The party considers this as part of a game to increase their bargain value.
The BJPs attempt would be to cash in on the public revulsion against the number game at the Centre. The smaller and unaligned forces have been conducting political bargaining through the media.
The BJP is also counting on the political fallout of the deals that the Congress would be forced to strike in the days to come. While the Congress would become junior player in important states, the regional parties could complicate matters for the party in states like Karnataka.
