BJP sweeps civic body elections in Assam

BJP won in 340 wards followed by Congress winning 232, AGP-39, AIUDF-8, NCP-4, BPF and CPM with one each while independents captured 77 wards.

GUWAHATI: In the semifinals to the assembly polls in 2016, BJP has swept the civic polls in Assam. It has captured more than 20 town committees and 23 municipal boards while ruling Congress managed to win seven town committees and 9 municipal boards. In 2009, Congress controlled over 50% of the 74 committees and boards. In 2009, Congress had 496 councilors while BJP just had 92.

BJP now has over 330 councilors while Congress has 280. Final tally is yet to come as counting is on. Mahendra Singh, BJP’s in-charge for Assam, told ET: “The verdict reveals what is going to come in 2016 assembly. People want change and are supporting BJP. Prime minister, Narendra Modi’s initiative for Northeast India and his visit to region recently has created a sense of assurance and people have seen that BJP is working for the development of the region.” Over the last few months, BJP has added 17.5 l members.
