RANCHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today arrived in Jharkhand to a black flag protest by BJP activists over price rise as police arrested nearly 100 of them in Ranchi and Bokaro.

The Bokaro police picked up about 25 BJP activists, including its state unit spokesman Biranchi Narain, for taking out a procession with an effigy of the Prime Minister to protest against price rise.

The police picked up another 50 BJP demonstrators at Hinoo Chowk, about two km from the Birsa Munda airport in Ranchi, for staging a demonstration.

Earlier, the BJP had announced this morning that it would hold black-flag and effigy-burning protests across the state to protest against the Prime Minister's visit in view of spiralling prices.

Jharkhand Vananchal Congress president and former minister Samresh Singh was kept under house arrest in Bokaro for attempting to stage a demonstration in protest against displacement at the BSP.

The Prime Minister is visiting Jharkhand to lay the foundation stone of the Rs 9,000 crore expansion and modernisation project of the Steel Authority of India Limited in Bokaro.
