BJP-Shiv Sena meeting ends without conclusion

Seat-sharing talks between the Shiv Sena and the BJP in Maharashtra got bogged down on Monday with the Sena refusing to concede the Bhiwandi seat in Thane district to its ally.

MUMBAI: Seat-sharing talks between the Shiv Sena and the BJP in Maharashtra got bogged down on Monday with the Sena refusing to concede the Bhiwandi seat in Thane district to its ally.

Earlier the stumbling blocks were the Kalyan and Jalgaon seats.

On Sunday, the BJP conceded Kalyan to the Sena and the latter took back its claim over Jalgaon.

Given the uncertainty over the success of the talks, the BJP has kept ready a plan to contest 32 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats on the basis of its own strength.

"We are very much for the alliance's continuance. But if the Sena continues to be obdurate then we will have no choice but to go alone," a senior BJP leader told TOI on Monday afternoon.

Another meeting to sort out the stalemate may be held in the evening or on Tuesday.
