BJP sets sight on improving tally in J&K

NEW DELHI: Riding on the success of the agitation fanned by it for returning land to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, the BJP has set its sight on improving its tally in Jammu and Kashmir assembly.

Besides fielding its candidates in the majority of the segments falling in the Jammu region, the party is toying with the idea of propping up independents with nationalist credentials in the remaining constituencies.

The saffron party fancies its chances in the 37 assembly segments falling within the Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha constituencies. It may field a few candidates in Ladakh. But in the Valley, where the party has practically no presence, it is looking at the possibility of backing independents who have a nationalist image.

Our top-most priority is the installation of a nationalist government in J&K. To achieve this, its essential to ensure that there is no split in the nationalist vote. Well put up our own candidates in constituencies where were strong.

In the remaining constituencies, were hoping to prop nationalist independents, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley, whos in-charge of the state, told newspersons here on Wednesday afternoon.

Internal surveys commissioned by the BJP brass have come as a shot in the arm to them. The party is confident of bettering its tally by capitalising on the goodwill generated among the Hindus because of its role in the Amarnath land row agitation.

In the 2002 polls, the party had fielded 58 candidates in the 87-member assembly, but could only win one seat(Nagrota).
