BJP seeks Rahul Gandhi's apology over comedian's mimicry of PM Modi at Indore event; Congress says it was just mimicry

New Delhi: BJP has launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi over a stand-up comedy enacted at the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme in Indore, and sought an apology from him for insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother and resorting to falsehoods.

A political row has erupted after comedian Pulkit Mani mimicked PM Modi's style of greeting international leaders and went on to mimic the way Modi speaks by saying 'Ma' at the Chhatron Ki Goonj programme. Talking to the media on the sidelines of a BJP programme in Fazilka, party's national general secretary Satish Poonia demanded an apology from Gandhi for insulting the PM's mother.

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal accused Gandhi and his programme of resorting to falsehoods and personal insults. "Look at the way he speaks about the PM's mother, who is no longer with us. What is the intent behind such insults?" Meghwal told reporters.

Congress leader Raashid Alvi, however, defended Gandhi, saying the act was "mimicry and nothing else" and alleged that the "real insult" was the remarks made by the PM about Sonia Gandhi.
