BJP says Congress will also trip on onion price issue

Having once paid the political price over onion issue, the BJP today predicted a similar fate for the Congress because of the skyrocketing rates of the vegetable.

NEW DELHI: Having once paid the political price over onion issue, the BJP on Wednesday predicted a similar fate for the Congress because of the skyrocketing rates of the vegetable.

"We had faced the consequences of onion price rise once and it is time the Congress pay the price politically," BJP President Rajnath Singh said here while slamming the Manmohan Singh government for the rising inflationary graph.

The BJP had lost Assembly elections in Delhi in 1998 when the then Opposition Congress cashed in on the onion price issue to oust the Sushma Swaraj government.

"Had the government taken adequate precaution, the prices of onion would not have skyrocketed. Not only onion, the prices of all commodities have shot up after this government came to power," Singh added.

Concerned over the rising prices of onion, the government yesterday put a stop on exports of the commodity for the next 15 days to ensure that adequate stocks are available in the domestic market.
